How to Get More Twitter Followers

May 13th, 2011

Do you want more followers interested in following you on Twitter?

There are 3 simple and quick ways to accomplish this:

1. Make certain your bio is optimized and completely filled in.
2. Follow your followers back for heaven’s sake!
3. Engage!

Today, I will focus on optimizing your Twitter Bio.

We have all encountered people who say “I won’t follow you back if you don’t have a link and bio.” So, does having these things really make a difference in the number of followers you have? The answer is: Absolutely.

The first thing people look at when reviewing your profile is your picture. The old adage is true: A picture is worth 1000 words. If someone has not taken the time to add a picture, it gives potential followers the inclination that you are a bot, spamming, or won’t provide valuable content.

What is the second thing connections look for when checking your profile? Most of us read the bio and this is one of the decisive factors when deciding whether or not we will follow you. If your bio is incomplete or not descriptive, you are missing out on possible followers. Twitter gives you 160 characters for your bio (20 more characters than you are allowed in a tweet) ~ use every single one.

How do you write your Twitter bio? I suggest you not use sentences. Instead focus on keywords with commas or | separating them. These keywords will also be used when people run a search on Twitter. Think of your bio as SEO for Twitter! You don’t have to tell us everything about you ~ save this for your tweets. My bio has keywords like Virtual Assistant, Authors, Realtors, etc. And another savvy tip: Place your Facebook fan page link directly in your bio along with your website URL in the provided space. I have noticed an increase in my Facebook followers since adding this one simple piece of information to my bio.

Will having a bio and website link in your Twitter profile really make a difference in the number of followers you have? The answer is *ABSOLUTELY.* How do I know this? I read. I perform research so I am on the top of the game for my clients. I do my homework. I am an avid Tweeter. And the research I have read suggests that you will attract 8-10 times more followers simply from adding your photo and bio.

Want more success? I suggest a custom Twitter background image instead of a default one. This creates a professional and well thought out Twitter profile. It also shows people you are there for the long haul and not just there to get people back to your “nudie site.” Keep in mind that studies show red colored images and backgrounds draw more people’s attention than any other color. Do you think it is a coincidence that Coca-Cola, Wendy’s, McDonalds, and even My Personal Secretary display red logos? It draws attention.

There are several websites where you can hire designers that will customize your Twitter background. Many of them also have a “package deal” where they will also create a custom YouTube background and Facebook Welcome Page. Contact me if you would like a few excellent referrals.

Remember: Be you, be honest, and tell us what you do and/or what you like. Take a few extra minutes to create the best bio possible. If you haven’t taken the time to write your Twitter bio: Do it now. And for heaven’s sake, please don’t tell everyone that you are an expert or guru ~ the minute you write this in your bio you lose complete credibility. If you haven’t noticed, most everyone on Twitter is an expert or guru of some sort. *LOL*
